You can delete quite a few unneeded files on the Nav IV to free up memory (same applies to Nav 5).
But before you start: MAKE BACKUP COPIES OF ALL THE FILES YOU DELETE!!!
If you delete the wrong one and don't have a copy, you may have to send the device back to Garmin!
Generally, it's safe to delete the following files:
- current.gpx -> will be automatically recreated next time time you connect to your PC
- temp.gpx -> copy of all waypoints/routes of last import from MapSource/Basecamp (Nav IV device)
- userdata.gpx -> copy of all waypoints/routes from last import from Mapsource/Basecamp (SD-Card)
- \Garmin\Vehicle -> delete all unused vehicle symbols (always keep at least one!)
- \Garmin\Help: delete all help files in languages you don't need
- \Garmin\Audible\ and \Garmin\Audible\Position -> audiobooks (samples)
- delete POI's you don't need
- delete voices you don't need (always keep at least one!)
- language translations for menu and buttons you don't need (keep the one in your language!)
- 3D-Building views
- line assistant
These are the main files (should not be deleted!)
\Garmin\
- gmapbmap.img -> Basemap, worldwide with main roads
- gmapprom.img -> 1. main map with details (Europe for european devices, North America for US devices)
- gmap3d.img -> 3D-Buildings
- gmaptz.img -> Timezone
- *.gma -> licence file for main map
- gmapprom.unl -> code for main map
\Garmin\JVC
- *.JVC -> Junction View for line assistant
Optional additional files in \Garmin\:
- gmapprom1.img -> 2. main map (pre programmed map)
- gmapsupp.img -> additional map (supplemental)
- gmapoem.img -> Original-Equipment-Manufacturer map (e.g. BMW, Honda, etc.). This map cannot be deactivated
\SD-card\Garmin
- gmapsupp.img -> supplemental map (e.g. in my case, I have Europe on the main device, and North America on the SD Card)
Note: you can use up to 4 maps in parallel (overlays, e.g. topographic maps on top of road maps). Those can be activated/deactivated individually in the menu (Extras -> Settings -> Maps -> Map Info:
- main map (gmapprom.img) in \Garmin, e.g. CNEUNT2010.##
- secondary map (gmapprom1.img) in \Garmin, e.g. CNEUNT2011.##
- supplementary map (gmapsupp.img) in \Garmin, e.g. TOPO #
- another supplementary map (gmapsupp.img) in \SD-CARD\Garmin, e.g. OpenMTB
