French police hassling Belgian motorcyclists.

It was in the press on Wednesday that the French police systematically control Belgian motorcyclists' drivers licenses.

For your information, in Belgium, licenses delivered until 1988 comprised the highest category you might drive, and all the categories below. So if you have an E drivers license, you can drive and ride anything from the A license down to E. I have a B license from 1971. So it is marked with an arrow that points upwards towards the A. That means, I am autorized to ride any motorcycle without limitation.

If I were to go to France and be controlled, I'd have to pay 275 € cash on the spot, even though my license is valid. The French are a bit obnoxious for that.

Now I have to go and get a renewed license on Monday. It's not the cost, but the time involved.

Just make sure that your license has motorcycles clearly marked on it before going to France ?

Since noon, I am the proud owner of a brand new European drivers license. I'm good for A1, A2, A3 and B.
It seems our federal minister of mobility has lodged a complaint with the French because all pre 1988 licenses are valid.
