Clutch for K1300s

Hi!

New to this forum, been reading a bit by using google translate as i don't speak or read german.

I am in the process of working on my clutch, had slight vibrations and a noise/rattle wich during this summer increased. Pulling the clutchlever in would make it go away.
So during storage this winter i thought about taking the clutch out of the bike for inspektion.
Frictionplates and steel's were in excellent order, pressureplate and hub had no wear at all.

But i am surprised as to the parts i found in the bike.

Hub is stamped 06, basket is stamped 07. Bike is built in february 2009. But the oilholes in the hub are correctly drilled for the frictionplates as of later models. It also has the bellville spring and washer also found in later models. the clutch is the one fitted in factory.

There are some problems anyhow, the 4 main damping springs have been compressed so they are 3mm to short, this makes them rattle like crazy in the basket, also this means they do not dampen the oscillation from the crank as they should.

Has anybody found a source to buy new?

Second problem is an oilproblem, lack of oil between the maingear and scissorgear, this has caused severe fretting corrossion of the surfaces.

If i can not source new springs i am thinking about making shims, one at each end of the spring. These will be made from high grade toolsteel. I made a test out of aluminium which can be seen in the pics.
The fretting can not be corrected, damage is already done, but i am thinking of putting a coat of Molykote D321R on the surfaces of the gears to help prevent further damage. Still waiting to see what Dupont thinks of using this kind of lubricant in an enviroment that at least get a drop of oil a year or so.

I will gladly take any ideas and wisdom you have learnt over the years on these bike's.

Hello Mattias,
first of all a warmly welcome to this forum and congratulations to your decision for the K1300S.
Usually a new member should take the chance to present himself in the the Guestbook (Gästebuch).

From my point of view and experience the rattling noise from the clutch is a normal ageing phenomenon. I can see (hear) the same on my bike.
There are several possible solutions to eliminate this sound I believe.
The most expensive one is the replacement of the complete clutch including the basket.
But I have found on Y**T**e some videos showing the replacement of the springs by new ones. For finding a source for the springs you should have a look to these videos.

I am not completely familiar with the construction of the clutch, but with your solution to eliminate the end-play of the springs by implementing shims, I think you need to ensure that these shims stay in its place and don't travel out to either side during operation.

May be some other guys in this forum have more hints to your questions. Stay calm, sometimes it takes a little time for more answers.
Have a good time
Jens

Thank you!

I visited the guestbook!

The plan is to make the shim look like this. Sticking 6mm in to the springs inside. Even if by some chance it jumps out of the spring, it can not protrude out of the basket.

When reassembling i was told to thread for and use M8x1,25 bolt's.

Having measured the holes after the rivets i can say to anybody thinking of doing this: Do NOT use M8 bolt's.

The holes are tapered and the smallest end is 7,3mm in diameter. That is 0,5mm over the size drill you should use to drill and tap an M8 thread. This means the thread depth will be to small, causing the threads to be stressed on the tips only.

The bigger end will be close to 8mm in diameter , which means that the bolt threads will not even touch the material in the basket.

Was planning on using M12 but that is to big, leaving to little material of the basket left thus reducing strength.

Better to drill out and put an helicoil threadinsert, i will use M10x1 thread. Bolt's will of course be grade 10.9. This will be the strongest possible solution, and then use loctite 270 up on installation.

Basket will be more likely to explode before the threads or bolts break.
